THEATREWORKS is fast earning a fantastic reputation for transferringsome of our favourite novels successfully to the stage.
This atmospheric costume drama played to enthusiastic audiences from CCornwall to Scotland on it's premier tour and recieved rave reviews:
"This performance of Hardy's pastoral epic was a joy to watch" Evening Standard.
It journeys beautifully through the seasons with most of the action taking place in the rural landscape, painted so well by Hardy with words! You don't have to have read the book to enjoy this passionate tale of 'country' love and obsession, but many may well remember that famous sword-play scene from the film with Julie Christie - when dashing Sergeant Troy wins the hand of beautiful Bathsheba! An exciting journey begins when Bathsheba refuses the hand of the humble Shepherd who loves her, and leaves the shelter of her Aunts Dorset cottage, to begin a new life as Mistress of her late Uncles farm. A fire, terrible storms and disease amongst the animals threaten her farm and its workers. There's a murder, a love triangle, a wedding, a wassil, a barn dance and heaps of pastoral comedy from yokels Lydia Smallbury and Joseph Poorgrass.
In remaining true to the novel, where comedy combines skilfully with tragedy, we ensure an enjoyable and moving theatre experience which is suitable for all.
